Asking For Discounts Is Working Really Well These Days

One way to define capitalism is that the strong prey on the weak.

And nowhere is this more apparent than right now if you want to buy something. Put simply, buyers have the power and most sellers are desperate.

So now is the perfect time for the man in the street to capitalise on this facet of capitalism.

I've therefore been having excellent success with asking for discounts over the last month or so. Whether that be in clothes shops, electronic retailers or Sainsbury's HomeBase.

The secret is twofold -

  1. If you don't ask you don't get, and
  2. Always smile when asking for a discount. Personally I like the line "I'd like to buy this but was wondering if there's some deal we could do"?

Another good tactic to try is to buy something but ask for another product to be thrown in for free.

I did this last week in Curry's when I bought a laptop computer. I told the salesman that I could only buy IF they threw in a free cordless phone costing £30. The guy thought about it a bit and then tried to suggest that this style of business wasn't really possible.

I countered saying if that was the case then it wasn't possible for me to buy the product, and I'd have to go instead to the internet or John Lewis.

5 minutes later I was walking to my car with both the Laptop and the phone.

Laptop Buying Tip - Size Is Important

When looking to buy a Laptop think hard about how you're going to use the machine because the size is important. Small is beautiful only if you're going to be on the move a lot.

Many Laptop owners buy them because they look better than a standard PC and take up less room. They don't buy them because they want the portability. If so then you're far better off with a large machine which comes with larger screen (17") and keyboard.

Incidentally the new Laptop I bought was a Compaq A935 for £450.

Nice machine, good specification which will last a good 4+ years before it needs replacing. Having a quick scan on the web Dixons are selling it for £450 (which is the price I paid in store at Curry's) but apparently if you enter the code 'ENTER5' when ordering online it offers a discount of £25.
