Useful Websites, Free Software We Like and Other Bits & Pieces

Get Remote Access To Your Computer Wherever You Are

The remote access software UVNC.com has been getting some good reviews lately.

Remote access software is where you use one computer to access the information on another. For example, when at work you might want an email that's on your home computer. If so this software will enable you to securely login to the home PC and control it via the screen in front of you.

The software is 100% free and it's worth testing out.

A Great Book on Charting The Markets

Brian Marber is a City veteran, probably the most widely read technical analyst in London. He's got 50 years of market experience behind him and has just published a well received book - Marber On Markets.

One area the book is very good on is Stop Losses, when to use them, where to place them etc.

The Tax Guide

Tax is a subject that many people prefer to sweep under the carpet. But a little bit of knowledge can often save good money by reducing your current bill. Remember, tax evasion is bad (and illegal) but tax-planning is smart.

Backup Your Firefox Extensions

Firefox blows Microsoft's inferior IE Explorer away (the software used for viewing the internet). One reason is that 3rd party software developers design all sorts of useful Extensions (often called add-ons) allowing you to customize it and make it easier to use.

If you use Firefox and have downloaded any extensions/add-ons then I like this one - FEBE.

It allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions. Plus it will enable you to easily synchronize your office and home browsers.

Coffee Cup - An example of a useful Firefox extension

The first thing than many people do when they start their computers is to have a quick surf around on the net, often checking the same sites everyday.

If you check 3 or 4 sites then that's no hassle but many people look at 10-30 sites and that means a lot of moving of the mouse and clicking.

But if you use Firefox and install the free plugin CoffeeCup you only need 1 click of the mouse for all your pre-programmed sites to open in Tabs.

I use this add-on and it's great.

Monitor Your Home From The Internet/Mobile Phone

This home monitoring software looks interesting. It seems simple to setup (no wires) and will send out an SMS (text message) if there's a problem.

Cost is £400 + £12 a month service charge.

One point to note however is that from reading the website I cannot see any evidence the security system is approved by the insurance companies. If so then don't expect to get a discount on your home insurance.

Free Personal Cash Management Software

If you're interested in managing your personal money using a software package then check out the free GnuCash application.

Can also be used to run the finance side of small businesses.

Increase Your Vocabulary - Get The 'Word Of The Day' E-mail

If you want to learn a new word everyday then sign up to the Oxford Dictionary offers a useful service for those that want to increase their vocabulary.

Sign up with your e-mail address and then everyday you'll get send the new 'word of the day'

Use This Website To Find Cheap Holiday Destinations

What with Sterling getting crushed over the last year and global inflation spiralling out of control, going away on holiday is starting to get financially damaging. But there are still places to visit that offer value such as Thailand and Turkey.

A good way to research how much value a country offers is to look at how much its bars charge for a Pint of beer. And the website www.pintprice.com has all the details.

Right now these are the following top 3 cheapest and most expensive Pints from around the globe -

Cheap
Expensive
Myanmar £0.31 Norway
£5.85
Rwanda £0.32 Greenland
£5.01
North Korea £0.32 Guadaloupe
£4.80

Like Listening To The Radio Via Internet? This Site Is Great

The internet and the radio gel well together because radio, unlike watching video or live streaming is far more stable.

Internet radio has many uses, for example people living abroad can never miss say Radio 4 in the morning or The Archers in the evening.

However, if you want to listen to a variety of radio stations it can often get messy, having to go to different sites, locate the feed etc.

Which is why this site radiopaq.com is great. It lists a load of different stations all from the one simple page.

We hope you enjoyed this month's newsletter...
