Forget ADVFN And Other Similar Sites When Checking Stock Prices

Anyone else starting to find ADVFN.com and other financial websites a real drag when wanting to quickly check stock prices or news on a specific company? This is the year 2008, the internet is a good 15 years old, and I want simple bits of information in a few seconds with NO hassle.

So I've found a quick and efficient way to get stock prices in about 5 seconds alongside 2 mouse clicks with none of the ridiculous 'logging on' or having to setup a free account etc.

The majority of internet browsers (the software you use to view websites) come with a little search box at the top right corner so we don't have to visit the Search Engine home page.

Most of these search boxes are also set to search Google (if yours isn't then click the small tab around the Search Box and you'll be able to change it to Google or another Search Engine if you prefer).

How To Quickly Check On Stock Prices

  • In the search box type in the ticker code perhaps 'SBRY' (or 'sbry' it doesn't matter)
  • This will then bring up a Google search results page
  • About 3-4 inches down the page you'll see some small links to 'Google Finance' 'Yahoo Finance', 'MSN Money' etc
  • Click Google Finance
  • Up comes the main page which will show Sainsbury's (SBRY) share price and all the related information - See here for an example

What To do If You don't Know The Company's Ticker Symbol

  • Go to Google Finance
  • Start typing in the company's name in the (Google Finance) search box and it will start to offer suggestions
  • Works just as well for UK stocks as it does for US ones

Another feature we like with Google Finance is the list of 'Related Companies' to the share you're looking at. Go to the website and you'll see what we mean.

We Continue To Like Google's Stock Because Of Points Like This

Long term readers will know that we've been buyers of Google's stock for the last 9 months.

Google Finance is a classic example of what we've been arguing - Google is forcing people to use its services, not by putting a gun to their head but because they make them so easy and efficient to use.

Don't discount points such as this because they're highly relevant for long term stock holders.
